Distances 2011 Movie – Storyline :

Following the sudden death of his father, a young man returns to his home town only to be haunted by a memory he didn’t know existed.

Review of Distances (2011 Movie):

Following the sudden death of his father, 27 year-old Graham Richards shuns the path set out before him of running his family’s publishing company and drops out of graduate school to return to his home town of Austin, Texas. Here, Graham hopes to reconnect with his old friends, Windham and Jacob, and gain the love of his removed best friend, Leah, all while pursuing his undying passion of being a musician. Now the master of his own destiny, Graham’s new life is better than imagined until he becomes haunted by experiences of breaks with reality that attack and slowly strip him of all he knows and loves. Becoming more and more infuriated, Graham eventually confronts that which is haunting him: himself. It is in this confrontation that Graham realizes he has yet to acknowledge a painful, suppressed memory about his family that will change his life forever.

Marshall makes the most of meager resources available to him. The only thing that comes across at times as a little less than polished and professional are performances of the secondary characters. A more experienced cast could have made a big difference in the final product. Also, the final scene felt a trifle flat and tacked on, as if there was some obligation to wrap up the story in a “Hollywood ending.” The dialog, for the most part, felt authentic with some moments of true, natural humor as well as some genuine darker episodes.

The bottom line here is not simply about the entertainment value of the movie itself, but the potential it promises for Marshall. Hopefully this movie will get some well-deserved attention on the indie film festival circuit. I’m anxious now to see what he and Out There Productions can accomplish with a real chunk of money, not a shorter-than-shoestring budget. It should be awesome.
